2012/2013 Admission at National Water Resources Institute

A. Regular Courses 2012/2013 Admission
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into Institute’s regular courses leading to the award of Certificate in Water Resources Engineering Technology and Advanced Diploma in Hydro-geology.


1.0 One-Year Certificate in water Resources Engineering technology

1.1 Entry Requirements
  • Candidates for the one year Certificate in Water Resources Engineering should have attempted '0' Level or SSCE in the Sciences,
  • Preference will be given to staff of Water Agencies having some years of experience and operators or holders of Assistant Works Superintendent (AWS) Certificate.
  • The course prepares the candidates to be skilled craftsmen/technicians on a broad base for various sub-sectors of water resources engineering.
2.0 One- Year Advanced Diploma in Hydrogeology

2.1 Entry Requirements
Candidates for the one year Advanced Diploma in Hydrogeology should have BSc/HND in any of the following areas:
  • Water Resources Engineering Technology,
  • Civil Engineering Technology,
  • Irrigation Engineering Technology,
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology,
  • Geology and Geography.
The programme is a skill oriented course meant to give practical knowledge on Hydrogeology to enable the candidates practice as professionals in Water sector.

On Submission
All completed application forms must be addressed to the DIRECTOR (TRAINING), NATIONAL WATER RESOURCES INSTITUTE, MANDO ROAD, P.MB. 2309, KADUNA.
All completed application forms must be signed by the candidate’s Local Government Chairman and accompanied by
  • Two (2) self-addressed and stamped envelopes measuring 22 x 10 cm
  • Certified photocopies of academic qualifications
  • A Certificate of indigene showing Local Government of origin
  • Two (2) recent passport sized photographs.

12th October, 2012.

Method of Application for 1.0 and 2.0 above
Application forms are obtainable personally from the Institute or by post on receipt of the following:
  • A non-refundable application fee of two thousand Naira (N2,000.00) in bank draft or cash to National Water Resources Institute, Mando Road, P.M.B. 2309, Kaduna. (The name and address of the applicant must be written at the back of the bank draft)
  • A self addressed and stamped envelope measuring 25x20 cm.

B. Induction Courses(2012)
The National Council on Water Resources in 2006, mandated the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna to be conducting Induction Course regularly for New Entrants into the Water sector. The basic objective of the induction course is to enable Fresh Engineers, Technologist and Scientists in the Federal Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development, River Basin Development Authorities, State Water Agencies Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies, State Ministries of Water Resources and Agriculture and the Private Sector acquire the necessary skills and techniques they require to function effectively in their various organizations.

Programme: Induction course

Date: 10th October - 7th December 2012
Participation: New Entrants into the Water Sector with Bachelors Degree or Hnd and not above grade level 10
Fee: Sponsoring Agencies to be responsible for transportation, accommodation and day-to-day up keep of their nomination participants.


A. Youth Empowerment Courses
The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) by its enabling Act No. 3 of 2nd March, 1985 is mandated to among other functions “Advise the Minister on the National Water Resources Training needs and priority; and produce necessary codes of practice in water resources engineering related to and suitable for Nigerian condition”,
In fulfillment of its mandate, NWRI deemed it imperative to train unemployed Nigerian youths in water well drilling rig fabrication, water well drilling technology and household water management, thus contributing to poverty reduction through youth empowerment which is one of the cardinal programmes of the present government of Nigeria.

1) Programme: Well Drilling Technology
Date: 15th October, 2012 - 15th October, 2013
Participation: Holder of minimum qualification of National Diploma in science and technology
Fee: Sponsoring Agencies to be responsible for transportation, accommodation, and day to day upkeep of their norminant participants

2) Programme: Household water Management
Date: 11th March 2013- 9th June 2013
Participation: candidates should have attempted 'O' Level or SSCE in the Sciences
Fee: Sponsoring Agencies to be responsible for transportation, accommodation, and day to day up-keep of their nominated participants.

3) Programme: Water well drilling rig fabrication
Date: 15th April, 2013 - 15th October, 2013
Participation:   Holder of minimum qualification of National Diploma in science and technology
Fee: Sponsoring Agencies to be responsible for transportation, accommodation, and day to day up-keep of their nominated participants.


A. Short Courses (2012)
The Continuing Education Division (CEO) of the National Water Resources Institute design and conduct short courses. The courses enable participants to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for their jobs. The training includes syndicate sessions and field visits to test the applicability of knowledge gained using the tools. Handouts and other instructional materials will be used extensively to facilitate the training.

1) Programme: Operation and Maintenance of irrigation Schemes
Date: 8th- 12th October, 2012
Participation: technical field staff under RBDAs involved in the on-farm water advisory service to the irrigation farmers, leaders of water users Association
Fee: N 35,000.00

2) Programme:Water quality Monitoring and laboratory Management
Date: 15th-19th October 2012
Participation: Quality control managers in public and private Utilities; Scientist, technologist and technicians in the water sector(Public and Private utilities consultants academia, etc)
Fee: N 35, 000.00

3) Programme: Water Resources Data collection, Analysis and presentation
Date: 22nd - 26th October, 2012
Participation: The eligible participants include Hgdrologists, irrigation Engineers, Scientist and water resources engineer, Private Consultants and any other Interested candidates. Craftman, plumbers, Supervisors and Managers in the Water Industry
Fee: N35, 00.00

4) Programme: Operation and Maintenance of pipe Network and Plumbing Fixtures

Date: 5th -9th November, 2012, 19th - 23rd November, 2012
Participation: Waterworks operators, technologist,Scientist and technicians in private and public water utilities.
Fee: N20, 000

5) Water treatment operation and control
Fee: N 35,000.00


A. Rural Water Supply and Sanitation centre(RWSSC) 2012 Courses
The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Centre (RWSSC) for Capacity Development was established in National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) in 2008 in order to strengthen personnel training in rural water supply and sanitation sector, aimed at improving access of water supply and sanitation in Nigeria. Within the Centre, there is a technical assistance project carried out with the grant aid of JICA.
NWRI in conjunction with the Japanese experts has developed practical and hands-on short term training courses. The courses offered this year are as follows:

1) Programme: Borehole construction and management
Date: 1st- 6th October, 2012
Participation: Geologist, Hydrologist, Engineers, Supervisors, Site Managers of water supply facility construction for ground water development/ borehole construction management.
Fee: N40,000.00

2) Programme: Groundwater Investigation

Date: 8th- 13th October 2012
Participation: Geologist, Hydrologist, Engineers, Supervisors, Site Managers of water supply facility construction for ground water development/ borehole construction management.
Fee: N40,000.00

3) Programme: Borehole Rehabilitation and Maintenance
Date: 22nd - 26th October, 2012
Participation: Water Supply officer, Geologist, Hydro-geologist, Engineers, Technologist, Technicians,Managers, Supervisors and Contractors for alternative water resources facilities planning design and construction
Fee: N40,000.00

4) Programme: Hand Pump installation, Operation and Maintenance

Date: 12th - 16th November, 2012
Participation: Water Supply Officers in charge of Operation and Maintenance of hand pumps, drillers,  Mechanics and supervisors of boreholes construction projects at Local Governments Area and Community Mechanics/Operators of hand pumps
Fee: N40,000.00

5) Programme:  Development of Alternative Water Sources (spring Development, Hand Dug well, Rain Water Harvesting)

Date: 12th - 22nd November, 2012
Participation: Water Supply officer, Geologist, Hydro-geologist, Engineers, Technologist, Technicians,Managers, Supervisors and Contractors for alternative water resources facilities planning design and construction
Fee: N40,000.00

6) Programme:  Community Mobilization and Management

Date: 19th - 23rd November, 2012
Participation: Community Mobilization Officers of LGAs and State Levels, Planning officers, Managers and Specialist
Fee: N40,000.00

7) Programme:  Hygiene and Sanitation Promotion
Date: 3rd - 7th December, 2012
Participation: Sanitation and hygiene Officers at LGAs and State Levels WASHCOM members, School Environmental Health clubs(EHC)Teachers
Fee: N40,000.00

8) Programme:  Drilling Technology

Date: 3rd - 14th December, 2012
Participation: Drillers, Assistant Drillers, Officers, Supervisors and site Managers for boreholes construction projects
Fee: N40,000.00
