A job applicant from
Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, Mr. Binaebi Oyeghe,
had embarked on an indefinite hunger strike to protest his continued
unemployment status.
Oyeghe, who lamented the
rising unemployment rate in the country, in an interview with the press in Yenagoa on Thursday, said he took the decision to
protest against the development after an endless search for job.
Oyeghe holds a Masters
degree in Literature from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, after
obtaining his first degree in English and Literary Studies from the
state-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma. He said he would not
suspend his hunger strike until the state government offered him a job.
Narrating his ordeal, he
said there had been prejudice against him at different employment
interviews in the state and across the country because of his minor
hearing impairment.
Oyeghe’s unpublished creative works titled, Fragments of Our Grave,
a 350-page ‘anti-people novel’ was recently accepted for publication by
Dorrance Publishing Company, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, United States of
America. The creative writer, however, said the discrimination and
joblessness had become unbearable. He added that he would die of hunger
if the government failed to offer him employment.
He argued that it had been difficult for him to secure a job in the state because he had no godfather.
